Hello!

I am new to the nhcg community, and I am desperate. I'm not quite sure how to ask for help. I want to learn how to fend for myself hair-wise so much, but I struggle to find the right teachers. I have always wanted to wear my hair natural, and I finally left my braids out without rebraiding them (it's been about 5 or 6 years; I cut off my relaxed hair/stopped using relaxers about around then, i think) but I have no supporters.  I am completely lost. The products I have/use are:

  1. http://bit.ly/Iilk5
  2. http://bit.ly/H9wB1
  3. http://bit.ly/12S6AE
  4. http://bit.ly/SYVjn
  5. http://bit.ly/4gQDvW

As of now, low-shampoo (just dab the scalp with the creme of nature) and co-wash with the pantene pro-v.  I think moisturize my scalp with the isoplus tea tree conditioner, and moistuize my hair with the original oil moisturizer. The Liv makes my hair feel softer/more manageable, but I'm wary of the chemicals so I have been using it less and less in favor of the oil moisturizer. I am completely uneducated. My hair looks fine to me, but I have not had a trim in awhile and I may need to cut most of it off because I could have a lot of split ends I don't know about. As said, my hair is completely natural and somewhat long (now it is unless I need more of a chop). Does anyone have any suggestions at all ? I like bigger hair i.e. twists/twistouts. I tried to do them, but they didn't look good at all, ha ha. :) This is my last summer before I leave college, and it'd be great to know about my own hair. I think a lot of black woman have no idea what their hair is like. I'd like to learn about myself so I can encourage others/answer their questions too. I'm open to anything.

 Thank you in advance,

Nana

Terri: congrats on your decision http://www.browngirl.blogsome.com
first, let me say that you've made an awesome decision to go with your natural hair. do be encouraged and trust yourself.

now, for products you could add a good hydrating conditioner. many like herbal essences hello hydration. i think simple is best as for products and regimen. imho, i'd stick with creme of nature shampoo if it agrees with your hair and i'd add a conditioner and something to seal the ends with like shea or mango butter or coconut oil.

i'm all about using very little product for the least amount of build up and it trains the hair to function without a bunch of stuff. i even set my hair on curlers with only conditioner and no heat.

as for your possible split ends, you don't have to do a big chop. you can get your ends clipped ever 4-6 weeks until all the damaged hair is gone, this will maintain most of your length. personally, i did a big chop many moons ago. hair will grow back and a big chop is an opportunity to really start anew.

sending positive energy your way
