Natural in the Military

Name:
Natural in the Military
Description:
Natural women in the civilian sector have the option to wear their hair in whichever style they choose, although, still under the scrutiny of their peers and employers on what may be deemed 'professional'. Military women, however, have actual regulations that deem how we can and cannot wear our hair. I wanted to create a space where we can share our woes and successes and give eachother support. All are welcome to join in! If you are not in the military, feel free to come and see how the other side lives!

I am a vet so I completely understand the challenges of trying to have natural hair in the military! Whoo it was the pitts in the field if I didn't have my hair cornrowed or in braids. Elastic bands, kevlars, and berets wreak absolute havoc on your hair and hairline!

Hey all! I've been absent for about EVER! How's everyone doing?

Hillary, I would suggest cornrows if your hair is long enough, or twists. Either way, keep water and moisture on it and limit the "products". Water and a tube of olive oil if you can have one... Good Luck!

i went natural for the second time a few months before i joined the marines...unfortunatly my fro would no longer fit under my covers and i had to perm it. i didnt have time to get braids because i was still in training. I was upset... but i cut it short and decided to just transition instead of doing a bc and just wear braids for a while untill it gets long enough to pupt into a ponytail...wish me luck!

Oh my goodness! I have been looking for other natural sisters who are in the military. I am in the military and have been natural for 2 years. Of those two years I have rocked a TWA for a few months then went to braids and twist with extension. The only time I actually wear my hair any other way is when on leave. However, this is about to change. Starting next month I have decided to wear my hair in two strand twist. And if I can keep it down (close to my head) I will wear a twist out. I have to see how the winter weather will treat my hair. I might go back to extensions or weave if the weather is too harsh for my hair. I am so glad that I found you all. What are some of the styles that work for you? And I too need to invest in multiple caps for the different hair styles.

Hey Kesi! I had a friend who was told to "tame" her natural hair. She was wearing to strand twists and was going to take part in a command ceremony as well. She was going to be a proffer. My OIC told her she couldn't wear it that way... Of course it didn't matter because she was going to wear a twist out for the ceremon anyway.

I'm doing good. Two hats, that sounds like a good idea. I had to do that when I used to wear micro braids. I have been quite content with myself. I did however find that I do not like the elastic headbands. They hurt my head and feel like they are yanking my hairline back.

Anyway, I'm loving me and I'm happy that you are loving your hair.

Mo Mo Hair!

Hello all! Oh, my hair.... Loving it, but my goodness! I am taking part in a change of command ceremony soon and I just took my twists out. I'll be sure to have them back in by the day of the ceremony, but this week, I have practice, which means that me and my big ole hair are going to be out there in front of everybody, obviously looking a mess in an ABU cap. I know some people just won't get it, but I hope they just press on. I think I'll go get a bigger cap too. I need a 'twist' hat and an 'afro' hat.

How are yáll doing?

Hi Kesi, Just wanted to stop by and let you know that I am a military wife. I was inspired to go natural when my hubby was stationed in Alaska. I saw a Nurse at Elemendorf AFB rocking a short fro at most of my group pediatrician appointments pushing a cart of records. I just wish I could tell her thank you because I just love my hair more now that I am natural.
I have 4b hair and my first year had some ups and downs along the way. Finding the hair things that work for you is the challenge. The most important thing is moisture. Find a good conditioner. When the hair gets longer it gets better.

Well welcome Angelfire3. Because of my current length, I'm pretty much stuck with the two strand twists and twist outs. My family and I are moving to germany in 2 weeks. We will be gone for 4 years! So when I come back, hopefully, I'll be rocking a fro like yours! It is beautiful and so is your family.... It's nice to have you.

Greetings ladies,
I used to be in the military and my husband is in the military, that's why I wanted to join this group. When I went in, I cut all my hair off and slicked it down with brown styling gel. When it got longer, I wore braids. The military is a strict, strict, strict profession, especially when it comes to natural sistas.
